When you commission built-in carpentry for your home — cabinets, wardrobes, TV consoles, kitchen panels — you’re paying a lot of attention to the finish: the colour, the hardware, the design. But what’s inside matters just as much, and most homeowners never ask about it. That ‘inside’ is the plywood substrate, and its grade directly affects your family’s health and the longevity of your furniture.
What Is Plywood Grading?
Plywood is graded based on its formaldehyde emission level — the amount of this chemical compound it releases into your indoor air over time. Formaldehyde is a known irritant that, at elevated concentrations, can cause respiratory issues, headaches, and eye irritation. In Singapore’s warm, relatively sealed HDB apartments, indoor air quality is particularly important.
The main grades used in Singapore carpentry are:
| Grade | Formaldehyde Limit | What It Means |
| ENF | ≤ 0.125 mg/m³ | Highest grade — near-zero emissions. Best for children’s rooms & enclosed spaces. |
| E0 | ≤ 0.050 mg/m³ | Excellent — very low emissions, widely regarded as safe for all residential use. |
| E1 | ≤ 0.125 mg/m³ | Standard — meets European safety benchmarks, acceptable for most furniture. |
| E2 | ≤ 0.500 mg/m³ | Lower grade — higher emissions, not recommended for enclosed or bedroom carpentry. |
What Grade Should Your ID Be Using?
For any carpentry inside your home — especially wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, and children’s bedroom furniture — you should insist on E0 or ENF grade plywood as a minimum. These grades are widely available in Singapore and are used by reputable renovation firms as their standard.
E1 is acceptable for carpentry in well-ventilated, open areas. E2 should be avoided entirely for residential interiors.
How to Verify
Ask your contractor to show you the product specification sheet or the supplier invoice for the plywood they plan to use. Reputable suppliers clearly state the emission grade on their documentation. If a contractor can’t or won’t provide this, that’s a red flag.
At My Reno Studio, we use E0 plywood as our standard for all custom carpentry — not as an upsell, but as our baseline commitment to the families living in the homes we build.
